A myopathy is a general term for a disease that affects the skeletal muscle (those which attach to bones). Skeletal muscles are the muscles that move the joints of the body. Myopathies are often caused by inherited genetic defects. The most common being Duchenne and Becker muscular dystrophies. Risk factors for other myopathies include the following:
Types of Myopathies There are many different types of myopathies. These can be described as;
Inherited myopathies Inherited myopathies are caused by a genetic defect. The most common muscular dystrophies, Duchenne and Becker muscular dystrophy, result from a genetic defect on the X chromosome. Endocrine myopathies Endocrine myopathies are caused by the over or underproduction of hormones. These conditions can develop in children and adults and usually respond well to treatment.
Inflammatory myopathies Inflammatory myopathies are autoimmune disorders (ie. the body's immune system mistakenly attacks healthy tissue). In the case of myopathies, it attacks healthy muscle fibres and causes inflammation, which in turn damages the muscle.
Toxic myopathies Toxic myopathies are caused by exposure to certain medications and chemicals. Excessive alcohol intake can also damage skeletal muscle. Drugs and chemicals that can cause myopathy include the following:
Myopathy Physiotherapy The specialist neurological physiotherapists can help control symptoms, such as muscular weakness and spasms, and enable patient to maintain a good quality of life. Treatment usually includes stretching and strengthening programmes to help maintain muscle strength and flexibility. The benefits of physiotherapy are: increased muscle strength increased balance increased flexibility reduced risk of falls Physiotherapy can also: stop the development of muscular and joint contractures provide equipment for mobility if required ie. walking aids, orthoses, callipers and wheelchairs advise on moving and handling techniques and equipment refer to other appropriate medical health professionals, with your consent anticipate and minimise other secondary complications of myopathies
